Design Objective: Create a table that flat-packs for storage.
While the common interpretation of the project was disassemblable table made from flat wood pieces, I knew that I wanted to use mechanics to create a new implementation of the idea of a flat-pack table. I decided to target the flat-pack concept, but with a focus on action. The typical folding table is designed with several discrete steps. Contrasting that, my design focuses the action of unfolding and re-folding the table, in a simple, single action.



When designing something as interaction-intensive as this, I knew that I needed to be able to test the motion that I designed, not only to understand the joints that would be necessary to build a practical model, but also to dictate the proportions that were most conducive to a satisfying unfold.
Using Balsa wood, paper, and glue, I replicated the pivot points of each hinge and mocked up the folding and unfolding mechanism


In the end, while the unfolding mechanism worked as intended, the weight of the structure had unintended effects on the user experience. If I could revise the design, I would use a significantly lighter material, like plastic, or at least hollow out the structure if using a heavier material. I would also use hinges that provided more resistance so users could safely unfold the table vertically, as this version was too heavy, and needed to be laid down to open. However, this concept of reimagining interaction really resonated with me and permeates my work since then.
